The 32-year-old Delhi resident and engineer by profession was being held by Pune police when he was able to flee, starting a huge manhunt that involved multiple states.

Shafi Uzzama’s arrest is a result of ongoing attempts by the NIA to find people connected to the Pune ISIS cell case. Four terror suspects were previously identified by the NIA through the release of their images, and they were each offered a reward of 3 lakh for information that would result in their arrest.

Several people were sought across the country, including Shafi Uzzama, Talha Liyakat Khan, Rizwan Abdul Haji Ali, and Abdulla Faiyaz Shaikh alias Daiperwala.

What’s Pune? cases of ISIS modules
Shahnawaz and two other people—Mohammad Imran Mohammad Yunus Khan and Mohammad Yunus Mohammad Yakub Saki—were detained by the Kothrud police in Pune on July 18 when they tried to steal a two-wheeler. In order to evade capture, Shahnawaz leapt out of the police car while it was transporting them to their Kondhwa home in Pune for a search.

The police learned that Khan and Saki, who were born in Ratlam, Madhya Pradesh, were reportedly associated with a different terror case reported in Rajasthan where explosives were seized in a car in March 2022. Khan and Saki each had a $5 lakh reward placed on their heads.

On July 22, the inquiry was handed off to the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS). The ATS detained other individuals while conducting their investigation, including IT engineer Qadir Dastagir Pathan and Kondhwa resident SN Kazi. Khan, Saki, and other suspects were the targets of the agency’s draconian Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act claims.

Khan and Saki’s revelation that Shahnawaz had acid stockpiled at Bopatghat near Kondhwa changed the course of the investigation. The Bomb Disposal and Detection Squad was enlisted by the NIA to help locate and confiscate the acid and other chemicals used in building bombs.

Additionally, the ATS seized a number of other items and discovered 500 GB of data on the accused’s laptops and smartphones that linked to YouTube videos on how to make explosives and Google photos of various locations.
