Rescue and Humanitarian Response:

Rescue teams work feverishly through the night to discover people buried beneath the wreckage. Thousands of people have been injured, and hospitals are overcrowded due to the country’s poor medical infrastructure. The United Nations and other organizations have begun attempts to get emergency supplies to the impacted communities.

Eyewitness Accounts:

One Herat resident, Bashir Ahmad, said, “We were in our offices when suddenly the building started shaking.” Wall plaster began to slip down, causing fissures in the walls, and several walls and portions of the structure fell… I can’t get in touch with my relatives… I’m too terrified and anxious; it was terrifying.”

Idrees Arsala, a student who was in his classroom during the earthquake, remarked, “The situation was very horrible; I have never experienced such a thing.”

Taliban Reaction:

The Taliban’s public health minister is visiting Herat to examine the extent of the damage and coordinate efforts to give relief and assistance to those impacted.

Earthquake-Prone Region:

Because Afghanistan is located at the confluence of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates, earthquakes are common, particularly in the Hindu Kush mountain region. Seismic activity has occurred in this area in the past.

Previous Earthquake Tragedy:

A 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck the province of Paktika in June of the previous year, killing over 1,000 people and displacing tens of thousands.

The earthquake has devastated the region, and rescue activities are underway as authorities and groups scramble to aid those impacted.
